Winter has come for Maryland and we aren’t the only ones looking for a comfortable place to wait out the challenges of our regions' ever changing forecast. While it may seem that winter is a bug and pest-free time, the opposite is true. As soon as the frost hits, cold weather can lead to some unexpected pest problems. In fact, you’re more likely to see a increase in activity from many types of bugs and rodents this time of year. Bugs and pests will seek out warm and comfortable places to wait out the winter.
From Annapolis to Baltimore City, any place can be a haven for overwintering pests.
As you pack away the tree, the lights, the inflatables and snuggle up inside for the season, here are some things to consider to help avoid pest issues this winter, and help ensure you don't unpack any surprises next holiday season:
Make an investment in a good storage system. Cardboard boxes and original packaging can all be compromised by pest and moisture. Lots of options on the market that will help keep your favorite tinsel sealed and safe from rodents, moths and spiders. Ranging from a simple storage tote with a good lid to an elaborate container system for storing items.
Wash all holiday linens, table cloths, stockings or anything that held food. Storing these specifically, in airtight containers is your best bet.
Taking down Christmas lights, do a visual inspection on your gutters and roof line for damage. This can help spot a easy repair, keeping rodents and wildlife out.
Carrying the boxes to the shed? Check the seals on the shed but don't forget house doorways and the garage. Repair or replace if they are showing any signs of age or dry rot. It only takes a spot about the size of a dime for a mouse to squeeze inside.
Storing in the basement? Make sure the caulk and sealing of plumbing lines or any other piping in your basement, is in tact. This will continue to keep your home protected and prepared for this winter season.
Don't forget the warmth of a fireplace isn't just great for us. Never store stacks of wood inside. This is an ideal spot for rodents, spiders, termites and other pests to seek out warmth, shelter and food. That being said, a fireplace comes with the need for woodpiles. Just be sure to to store wood at least 20feet from your house. Woodpiles are great insulation areas and food sources for unwelcome guests.
Whether firewood or decorations, be sure to do once over while packing away or bringing into your home, always keeping an eye out for any potential stowaways.
Protecting your decorations and your home by eliminating all the things that make storage attractive to pest, is a great first step in pest defense.
