As the holidays approach us, I am never surprised how many calls we get about the pests found when getting decorations ready for the season. Whether it’s moths flying out of storage boxes or tiny mice hiding out in artificial Christmas trees.
Attics, basements and other storage areas are prime real estate for rodents, and for good reasons: There is little to no human traffic, it’s relatively warm, and there are nearby food sources. On top of those enticing reasons, mice will also find plenty of nesting material to strip away; ribbon, tinsel, electrical wires, and insulation.
What sounds like a prefect holiday to mice can spell disaster for you.
Each year make sure you carefully pack away your decor, check back in a few weeks for holiday pack-up tips so that next year, the only surprises come from Santa.
In addition to packing up well the previous year, these will definitely help this year:
Go through storage boxes with Christmas lights and decorations in the garage or shed before you bring them inside.
Store food, especially pet food in airtight bins/containers. These are the biggest culprits!
Make sure to keep counters and floors free from crumbs, not leaving fruits and vegetables out in the open or on a counter.
Keep trash in tightly sealed bins, and not stored inside your home, especially at night.
Spend your holidays with the ones on your guest list, set boundaries for unwelcome pests. Seal any open cracks, openings and entryways.
A little preventative measure can save you money and stress for seasons to come, not to mention keeping your nights silent from those stirring mice.
